Below is an article from the Wed., June 13th 2007 edition of The Manifest (pg 18) Local Rotary gives care to Fraser River by Tonya Bina The young Rotary Club in Winter Park and the Fraser Valley is setting its sights on the Fraser River. An Adopt-A-River campaign has been launched, and the local Rotary Club has identified a two-mile river stretch it plans to manage. “The river is the heart and soul of Grand County,” said avid fisherman and Rotary President-Elect Will Arduino. “It’s a great enough river to have been the fly-fishing location of choice for the president of the U.S.” He and Rotary President Mark Johnson were given the go-ahead from the town of Fraser last week to have organized river cleanup days throughout the summer. The club’s stretch of river extends from Safeway up to near the Rendezvous development. Club members also hope to work with the town to maintain river access and create improvements-- such as a wheelchair-accessible fishing platform. They also intend to sponsor science and environmental learning opportunities at the river, involving school-aged children and river experts. “We’d like to call attention to the river and the need for us to be good stewards for it,” Arduino said. Club members especially aim to keep the river area free of “Starbucks cups, Mickey-D litter and Safeway bags,” Johnson said. The Adopt-A-River idea is a continuation of the attention the Fraser River has received of late. With the Fraser-Winter Park section of the river recently restored, due to a $770,000 Fraser River Enhancement Project paid for by Great Outdoors Colorado grants and the towns of Winter Park and Fraser, the Adopt-a-River project can serve to maintain the work that was done. The FREP improved aquatic habitat, trails and interpretive signage. The Adopt-a-River idea marks the first major project sponsored by the year-old Rotary. “We would love to see other people adopt other chunks,” Johnson said. Another project on which the local Rotary is embarking is an Adopt-a-Highway stretch of U.S. Highway 40 at the north edge of town between mile marker 226 and 224. For these and other goals, Rotarians say more members are welcome. Already 28 members-strong, the local Rotary club meets at noon each Tuesday at the Beaver Village Lodge in Winter Park. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
